Requesting a background check on a provider

You can order a background check on any provider you're talking with on Bornbir. The check is run by Checkr, an accredited consumer reporting agency, and paid for by you — a one-time $49.99.

How to request one

  1. Open your conversation with the provider in Messages.
  2. Click Request background check above the message box (on a phone it just says Background check).
  3. Review what's included, then click Continue to payment and pay by card on Stripe's secure checkout.

If the provider already has a completed check, the button tells you so — the badge is already on their profile and there's nothing to order. If a check is already in progress (yours or someone else's), you'll see its status instead.

What Checkr screens for

  • National criminal database
  • Sex offender registry
  • Global watchlist
  • Social Security number trace

For a provider based in Canada, the check covers a Canadian criminal record search and the global watchlist instead. Background checks are available for providers in the US and Canada.

What to expect

  • Timing — Checkr emails the provider an invitation to enter their details. Once they do, most reports finish within a day; county searches can take a few days. We email you as soon as the result is in.
  • Privacy — you see pass status only. The full report goes to the provider and stays on Checkr's site; Bornbir never sees their details. Ask the provider directly if you'd like to know more.
  • A clear result — the provider's profile shows a dated "Background checked" badge wherever families see them.
  • Any other result — no badge is issued. Bornbir only sees pass status.
  • Refunds — if the provider's invitation expires unused after 7 days, or Checkr cancels the report, you're refunded in full. Email support@bornbir.com with any questions.
